Man, I had a super duper painck today when my cat decided it would be awesome to jump off of the surge portector and reboot my computer just as I was finishing up this page. Thankfully I had saved it earlier. BUt man, the feeling going through me was one that was not good. And why, oh why does Photoshop not have an autosave option?!!
Well, other than that the page came off without a hitch. The other big news is that I have decided on the next book I will be working to complete in it's entirety. That would be my book, The King's Game. And I have also completed the cover drawing for FDTN book 1. Information about both of which can be found on my studio blog: HERE
We are Finished! 02/08/2010
Well, celebrations are in order. FDTN book 1 is in the can, as far as all of the line art is concerned. Book 1: The Map To Save Us, clocks in at 152 pages and I amworking to get the entire thing completed in about three months and then it will be available right here on the website. So keep your eyes and ears open.
Looks like George has met the the mysterious figures of this here story. Wonder what's going to happen next. And what they're saying to him in crazy language talk.
I Suppose Explanations Are In Order 01/15/2010
See what had happened is stuff went down. Guys, I really didn't expect this past hiatus to go as long as it did. Let me fill you all in one what happened.
So, in December I was tasked with completing the process for receiving a financial license called the Series 66. This license basically allows me to ask on an advisory type level with clients regarding financial investments (i.e. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds etc.) . I had to get this license as a part of a promotion at my day job. This whole process ate up about a solid month. By the time I had finished, it was after Christmas and things were still crazy.
Most of you have probably heard of Kazu Kibuishi and his wonderful graphic novel series, Amulet. Well, for the last two volumes I have served as an assistant in the coloring process of pages. I basically put all comics and art projects on hold while I finished all of this stuff up with the 66. Right after I had finished the licensing exam, I jumped back in to help with the Amulet production as they were nearing the end. Then I asked if I could lend a hand in helping out the final coloring process of the pages. Kazu was nice enough to allow me to try my hand at this. So that took up a couple more weeks of my free time. It's been such an honor to be a part of this series.
Finally, there's been a lot of work going into the final stretch of preparing my preview for The King's Game. This will be my second graphic novel pitch and will hopefully be the one that makes it through the process to finally being made an offer. So far I am really really happy with these pages. But a lot of work remains on them.
But, I simply did not want to keep missing updates for you guys. I appreciate everyone who has continued to come by. I full expect updates to continue as normal for the forseeable future. So, be sure to be here every Monday for the next update!
Small Hiatus Dec, 2009
Sorry guys I have to take a small hiatus from the book. Basically until after Christmas. What happened is I got a promotion at work the end of last month and part of it entails that I get a new license to officially make me a financial advisor and I have to pass it by the end of the year. That basically means that I have to spend the next three weeks studying. Reminds me of the old days when I first started and had to get my Series 7. I hate to stop updates for a couple of weeks but I have to. I even pretty much had to stop my assistance on Amulet 3, which bummed me out. But look for me to be back by years end.
Also if you haven't stopped by my blog, please do so to catch a peek at my new graphic novel pitch and see a breakdown of my process when I create a page of a comic.
Thanks for your understanding. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a big Happy Birthday to Jesus. :-)
Back Again and an Awesome Radio Show
Sorry for the lack of an update last week everyone. Things got really busy and I ended up catching a bit of a cold that just wore me out. I slept a lot more than normal this past week. Kinda nice but I need more of it. BUmms me out that I didn't finish up though as this week would have been the end of this scene. But alas we'll wait for next week.
Also, as some of you may know I am huge UFO and conspiracy buff. As if this comic didn't already reveal some of that. Well, I wanted yo share with you all a radio interview with a gentlemen on what is my favorite UFO topic at this time. Alien Moon Bases. Now, please remember a lot of this stuff is just plain fun, so I don't know where I land on all of it, but it's intriguing stuff. I hope you enjoy:
Been Busy/Tired 11/07/09
Sorry, for the lack of blog updates around these parts lately. Things have been crazy busy between all of the projects going on. When I find myself uploading the FDTN page, I feel like I could just pass out. Today I just wanted to get the page up and online a bit early, so I could take it easy tomorrow.
Alot has gone on since I last posted. I flew up to NYC for a few days and visited my Dad and met with my agent, Brendan Deneen, for a little chat. We've been discussing the prospect of pitching FDTN to some publishers. I would love to hear your thoughts on that as my readers. Not sure where we'll stand on it yet, but it's out there.
I've been really busy helping Kazu Kibuishi and crew finish up production work on Amulet 3, which is reading and looking unbelievable! Things are starting to crank up with that so, I expect it will only get crazier.
FDTN is still coming along, I want very much to spend more time on it and finish things up quickly, but the time needed to get that done has just been slipping away. But some interesting stuff will be coming to pass pretty soon here in the next few weeks. So get ready!
And most importantly, my baby girl Story turned 1 this past week. I can't belive how much time has passed already. Watching her grow up has been amazing and challenging. I'm looking forward to the new year coming up. We got to celebrate two birthdays that day, as Kazu and his wife Amy, had their first child that day as well! So it was just good times all around.
Sicky Time
I've been feeling pretty sick the last week or so and this past weekend it decided it was time to go full-blown crazy on me. Only a cold really, so no biggie. It is however when your day is spent talking on the phone with people for 10 hours. Decided to come home early from work yesterday and slept the day off. It was nice. Watched TV with my family and went to bed kinda early.
In othe news, things have been really busy with comics work and painting. Which is nice right now. I've been juggling my time between a couple of paying gigs and working on a new YA graphic novel. Some of the art has been coming along nicely in my sketch book. We'll see how far it goes.
I want to take a second and thank some good friends for lending a hand on the flatting of the recent FDTN pages. Josh Ulrich, Denver Jackson and Ryan Hoffman have pretty much helped me close the end of book 1 on the flatting front. I have about five pages left to draw and then its all lettering and grayshading until the end. So, thanks guys! You've made a big difference in helping me get to the end.
A Little Vaca 10/04/09
It's always nice to get away and get some R&R. This weekend my family and my inlaws went down to Disney World and hung out. Note to self, taking a child to Disney makes the trip a much different experience. It's a lot more hectic, tiring and oddly enough... special. It was a nice experience. I know it will get easier as she gets older. She was a bit young to go this time, but we had company visiting the country who have never been, so we had to go!
Woof
This page was quite the beast. I started this page months ago, but stopped working on it because I was considering making some changes overall to the composition. It's one of those pages I really wanted to pop, because its kind of my "Tivo" moment. Not sure how many of you are fans of Lost, but if you remember the blast door map from Season 2, then you know what I mean. I've long wanted to show Virgil's study from before they took their fateful fishing trip. Lots of little things in this scene.
And We're Back! 09/20/09
Well guys, it's been awhile. Thank you all for being patient while I finished some things up. I really took some time and focused on getting the pencils and inks done for the rest book 1. I still have a few pages (about five) left to draw and then the line art on book 1 will be in the bag. It's been really liberating to focus on that for awhile.
A lot has been going on though. Aside from From Death Til Now, my other graphic novel project The Unknowns is making the rounds at the publishers. Not much back from them on it yet, but things seem to be moving in a good direction.
Thanks again for sticking around. Some fun stuff is ahead!
FDTN Coming Back and Two Years
I'm a bit embarassed. July came and went with no real mention ofthe fact that we were passing the two year mark of FDTN online. This book isn't anywhere where I thought it would be. In some ways thats a bummer, but more than not, it inspires me to keep going. I want you guys to know how much I appreciate you guys waiting while I tie things up. I'm excited to say I'm about ten pages from being done with pencil and inks on book 1. What that means for us is that I will be bringing back weekly updates in September. Barring no unforeseen setbacks. I'm ready to get back to showing off the final 50 pages and getting you guys geared up for book 2. So as a 2 year anniversary gift, I wanted to give you guys a sample page coming up from the next scene. Things are happening guys. Stay tuned.
Sketches and Rebranding 05/31/2009
Well at last I am posting some of the sketching I've been doing. I'm trying to get back into the feel of some of the characters we haven't seen in awhile. Mainly Thomas. He features pretty heavy in the end of this book. So, I figured I'd better get a grip on how to draw him again.
Also, I have decided that once FDTN comes back I am going to completely rebrand the book. A lot of the design work I created for this thing occured when I barely knew anything at all about Photoshop or web design. So I want to help build an identity on this book. With my sketch is my first attempt at a new font for the logo. Let me know what you think. I expect that it's gonna take some time, but it should be fun. My plan this week is to draw the next eight pages and start plowing through the inks on the pages. I hope I can keep up the work ethic. And once I'm ready for the computer shading portion, I may be lookings for some help with the flatting work. Anyone volunteers interested? Email me, and show some samples of your work.
The domain name will still work, so no need to change bookmarks or anything like that. I'm just consolidating. Also, there's been a really positive review of From Death Til Now posted at the Cool Web Comic List Blog. Go check it out! And if you want to keep up with my latest news, the best place to go right now is my studio blog: http://www.michaelregina.blogspot.com/
Thanks guys! Things are still being worked on over here!
